My First Vintage Ads
I first stumbled upon a handful of vintage print ads years ago and I was totally captivated by their copy.
I found the advertisements humorous, interesting and sometimes a little subversive.
In this Limited Gallery, I am showing the first ads I purchased and what I liked about them.
Du Pont Cellophane (est 1952)
I’ve lived in Delaware for the last 15 years, in which the Du Pont company is headquartered.
This ad stood out to me both for its bright pop of green and red, and the fact that it was Du Pont.
But when reviewing the copy, I found the “I help myself to the cut I want - At the price I want to pay” funny.
Its funny to me because its selling something that for our modern eyes, is obvious. I want to select my cuts, and I check the price.
I just never thought of this being a “benefit” in the classical marketing sense.
Of course almost all of our meat today is bought in plastic wrap. But I imagine when this ad was printed when meat markets and butchers were still a thing.
Its interesting to me how changes in retailing impact the changes in advertising.
